live well locally

What is a 20 minute neighbourhood?

This ‘20 minute neighbourhood’ is where residents can access what they need with a short, under 20 minute, journey, by walking, wheeling or scooting. We know this concept isn’t new and that the benefits are far reaching by supporting the health, wellbeing, safety of our residents regardless of age, disability or socio-economic status. We also want to encourage investment in our local businesses and by making small changes to improve our environment.

This is a great video from Scotland's Climate Assembly explaining what a post-COVID 20 min neighbourhood could be like in a Scottish Context.

88% of the randomly selected participants wanted to "Realise the principles of a ‘20-minute community’ in flexible ways across Scotland by reducing the need to travel for work, shopping, services and recreation in ways that support localised living".

The concept of 15 and 20 minute cities are transferable and adaptable to South West Edinburgh too. Here's a video from Melbourne that describes the concept.

Here's another example from Copenhagen - it helps understand how the concept can be applied in different settings
