Part 2: Baberton & Juniper Green and Wester Hailes & Clovenstone: "a deep drive"
In the second in this series of post we focus on two neighbourhoods in the Pentland Hills. First up: Baberton & Juniper Green. Here's a map of the area we've focused on:
Car ownership:
Baberton & Juniper Green has 1.2 cars per household, above the Scottish average, despite being in a city ward.
Only 15% have no car - this is well below the Scottish and Edinburgh averages (31% & 40%). But that's c300 homes with no access to a vehicle at all in this is area.
Commutes:
Half of people drive to work/study. Note it’s 2011 data, so working from home will be much more common now.
Still half that DON’T drive to work though, despite very high car ownership.
How does it compare?
Now we compare Baberton & Juniper Green with Wester Hailes and Clovenstone. Many people here will catch the same/similar buses or trains - it’s less than half a mile apart, in the same ward, but separated by the bypass. Here's a map of where the data is from:
Despite this closeness and similar public transport, it’s a very different picture for access to cars/vans.
Almost 60% have no car at all.
Households are Baberton are as likely to have two or three cars as homes that will have one car in Clovenstone.
How do commutes compare?
That follows through into commuting, although not as starkly, despite being so close to each other. One conclusion from this chart could be that when you have a car you’re more likely to drive it on your own - note those carrying passengers are basically identical:
