SW20 community cargo bike --available mid-August 2022

Updated: Oct 3, 2022

SW20 are pleased to announce the trial of a Colinton-based community cargo bike. This e-bike has been kindly lent to us by Cargo Bike Movement and is available for people in the area to borrow at no cost in order to try out an electric cargo bike! Thanks go to Porty Community Energy who ran a similar trial first and inspired us!

The bike can be used to carry people (1 adult passenger or 2 children) or a lot of cargo, such as shopping –up to 100kg in total-- and is electrically assisted to make life very easy moving such loads.

We want people to discover the fun and ease of moving around the community without needing to use a car or have the hassle of finding a parking space. Cargo bikes are expected to replace many car journeys over the next few years and to enhance our community with fun, environmentally sensitive and easy transport: this will benefit the community and its businesses in many ways.

Users of the bike will have an induction in how to use and manage the bike. SW20 and CBM will manage the charging and maintenance of the bike.

We are currently looking for more permanent storage, however the bike will be available for collection / drop off from either Spylaw Bank Road area or Spylaw park (near the CVE ‘Shed’).

  • The following rules apply to the hire of the bike (full terms and conditions are shown as part of the booking process):

  • No fee will be charged for hiring the bike

  • The bike may not be used for business purposes

  • All users will require a 30 minute bike ‘induction’ session

  • We will loan the bike out on a full day basis and arrange with each hirer a convenient time to collect and drop off the bike from Colinton

  • ID (driving licence or passport) and proof of address (recent bill/council tax) will be required from the hirer

  • ‘Common sense’ rules apply to the loan and use of the bike

We hope that users new to or considering an electronic cargo bike will see the advantages of this type of transport and benefit from its use. If the trial is a success, SW20 will be looking to have a variety of Colinton community e-bikes available.

Here's how it works:

1) Register here. You only need to do this once and you need to confirm your email before you can book.

2) Select the day you'd like, put it in the cart and write a note of the pick up and drop off times you'd prefer.

3) Don't forget to CHECK OUT (even though it's free). Otherwise we wont see your request.

4) Wait to see if your request is approved. The booking isn't complete until we send through confirmation.

5) The first time you borrow the bike we need to give you a 30 min induction to the bike and check your ID and proof of address.

This is what the bike looks like--it's an awesome machine and will put a smile on your / your passenger's faces!
