What's next for SW20?

Happy New Year!

South West Edinburgh 20 Minute Neighbourhoods (SW20) is thinking about the next steps for our group. This will likely be incorporating as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) or other body.

We have two requests: firstly, if you wish to get involved, please get in touch. You could become a member, trustee or simply help out! Secondly, we’d like to hear your views on our recently drafted Mission and Aims (below).

That’s why we’re writing to you - our supporters, subscribers, followers and those who have contacted us recently.

Let us know your thoughts hellosw20@gmail.com or via Twitter @SW20ed

SW20 Mission:

To live better locally and promote 20 minute neighbourhoods in South West Edinburgh.

Aims:

  1. Create inclusive, resilient & accessible communities with thriving local business and services

  2. Enable local people to choose more sustainable ways to access local businesses, transport, public services, schools and green spaces

  3. Help reduce the effects of inactivity, air pollution and climate change.

Membership:

SW20 is a membership based group. By becoming a member you can lend your skills, experience and enthusiasm, have your say on local campaigns and projects as well as helping out at events. We anticipate that there would be two tiers of membership:

  1. Board members, Trustees or Committee Members: Strategy, governance and communications

  2. Members: Voting and influence

Probable Structure

It is likely that we will become a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. This is a legal form unique to Scottish charities. It would enable the group to enter into contracts, employ staff, incur debts, own property, sue and be sued. It also provides a high degree of protection against liability. Members would have no liability.

Geography:

We propose to align SW20 action with Community Council boundaries.

These will include includes: Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Wester Hailes, Colinton, Longstone, Hutchinson/Chesser, Craiglockhart, Oxgangs, Firhill and Fairmilehead

We will primarily have a local focus and lead on local engagement and campaigns to further living better locally. But we will also support relevant campaigns outwith those areas that align with our Mission & Aims.

Umbrella / Partnership Organisations:

SW20 is a member of Better Edinburgh for Sustainable Transport (BEST).

In the future SW20 may also become a member of other groups such as Transform Scotland, Living Streets Edinburgh or other relevant groups with whom our mission aligns.
